Equipment must be new and certified by the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). Equipment tonnage is calculated using the cooling capacity listed on the AHRI certificate. Divide cooling capacity by 12,000 (1 ton = 12,000 Btuh), the result is not rounded. Example: AHRI cooling capacity 34,500/12,000 = 2.87-ton unit.
Terminology
Btuh: British Thermal Unit per Hour
SEER/SEER2: Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio/2
EER/EER2: Energy Efficiency Ratio/2
IEER: Integrated Energy Efficiency Ratio
COP: Coefficient of Performance
